The Impact of the HKPO Veterans Academy: Real Stories of Transformation and Achievement

“At the HKPO Veterans Academy, our mission is to focus on the transition of our servicemembers to civilians, and to place them in civilian jobs that catapult them to their next stage in their career as civilians”, states Jennifer Ralston, CEO of HKPO Veterans Academy.

Our purpose is to honor and serve our transitioning military community by empowering and upskilling them for post-military employment. Our mission is to support our transitioning military community by providing education and training for industry-recognized certifications, building professional networks, and providing mentorship along with the necessary resources that enable their transition from the military community into civilian employment.

This mission is critical, as our servicemembers deserve the time to properly transition after many years of service. We take pride in supporting military veterans as they transition to civilian careers. But more than that, we are honored to help guide real people—each with their own stories, backgrounds, dreams, and challenges—toward a brighter future. Through tailored training, mentorship, and a community of like-minded professionals, the Academy empowers these veterans to leverage their unique experiences, develop new skills, and pursue careers that fulfill their potential.

Today, I have the honor to introduce four remarkable individuals whose personal journeys have been transformed by the HKPO Veterans Academy. These are not just resumes—they are real people with real lives, full of passion, growth, and determination. For more information please visit our HKPO Veteran Academy Website.

Meet Michael Spradley: A Life of Service, a Future of Leadership

Michael Spradley’s story is one of dedication, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. With 24 years of service in the US Air Force, including as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Superintendent, Michael led teams under intense pressure, defusing dangerous situations and ensuring mission success. His military career speaks volumes about his leadership abilities, but it’s the personal journey that tells a deeper story. Michael is not just a career military man; he’s a father, a mentor, and someone who cares deeply about making a difference in the lives of others.

The HKPO Veterans Academy gave Michael the support he needed to transition from the high-stakes world of military operations to the fast-paced world of civilian project management. The Academy’s leadership training not only sharpened his decision-making and strategic thinking but also empowered him to approach leadership with even more emotional intelligence. Today, Michael is thriving in his civilian career, applying the same sense of responsibility and dedication that guided him through his military service.

Michael’s story is about more than just professional growth—it’s about the resilience that military veterans like him carry into every part of their lives. The Academy helped Michael translate his military experience into a leadership role that continues to evolve, impacting both his career and his community.

Meet Dr. Latisha T. Lewis: Service, Education, and the Drive to Lift Others

Dr. Latisha T. Lewis’ journey is an inspiring example of what happens when service, education, and a commitment to lifting others intersect. With 24 years of service in the Maryland Army National Guard, Latisha held multiple leadership roles and dedicated herself to mentoring fellow soldiers. Yet, her story is not just about what she did in the military; it’s about how she’s built a life after service that is focused on education, leadership, and giving back.

Latisha’s desire to serve others has always been at the core of her professional identity, and the HKPO Veterans Academy helped her strengthen that passion. Through the Academy’s programs, Latisha was able to refine her leadership style, sharpen her strategic thinking, and gain a deeper understanding of how to apply her vast experience to future goals. Today, Latisha is not only using her skills to further her own career but is also building a leadership academy for high school students. Her story is about giving back, developing the next generation, and showing that leadership isn’t just about climbing the ladder—it’s about helping others rise with you.

Latisha’s experience at the Academy gave her the tools to grow professionally while staying grounded in her core mission of service to others. She’s not just a leader—she’s a force for change, both in her community and beyond.

Meet Jody Hill: Finding Purpose and Balance Beyond the Uniform

Jody Hill’s story is a testament to the power of personal growth and embracing new possibilities. After 22 years of service in logistics management and human resources, Jody faced the challenge of transitioning from a military career into civilian life—a transition that is often more complex than it seems. But rather than simply following a path, Jody sought out new opportunities, new passions, and a deeper understanding of his personal and professional goals.

The HKPO Veterans Academy provided Jody with the flexibility and resources to map out a career path that aligns with his evolving interests. Through the Academy’s courses and certifications, Jody not only advanced his professional qualifications—working toward his Black Belt and PMP certification—but also discovered creative outlets, like designing corsets, that brought him fulfillment and balance.

In his own words, Jody reflects on how the Academy has transformed his approach to both his career and personal growth:

"The HKPO Academy has been a game changer for me. It gave me the flexibility and the tools I needed to navigate my transition out of the military and helped me discover new interests like taking courses to get certs online. It’s also supported my professional growth as I work toward earning my Black Belt and PMP certification."

Jody’s experience isn’t just about professional achievements—it’s about a new mindset, one that values personal exploration and a balanced approach to growth. The Academy gave him the space to pursue his passions while strengthening his career.

Meet Gary Pitcher : A Lifelong Learner Committed to Excellence

Gary Pitcher’s 23-year career in the US Air Force and his vast experience in project and operations management provide a glimpse into a life shaped by discipline, leadership, and adaptability. But beneath the certifications and accomplishments is a man who has continuously sought ways to improve and evolve, both personally and professionally.

Gary’s journey through the HKPO Veterans Academy has been about more than just enhancing his technical skills—it’s about learning how to balance personal goals with professional responsibilities. The Academy provided Gary with the tools to lead high-performing teams, solve complex problems, and manage projects with precision. However, his biggest takeaway is the importance of continuous learning and adapting to new environments. Today, Gary is not only excelling in his career but is also mentoring others and helping them achieve their own success.

Gary’s story, like the others, is one of growth, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence in every aspect of life. He’s not just leading in the workplace—he’s living a life that reflects his core values of integrity, teamwork, and personal development.
